Hello!

Seems like we have a clear winner, 1:7 CADuntu vs LibreCAD and LibreCAD won with 140 votes against CADuntu that had only 20 votes. So, goodbye CADuntu and welcome LibreCAD

I like the name! Nitro came up with the name first here, the domain LibreCAD.org was free and the name is what it is. Libre (as in free) and CAD as in Computer Aided Design. A very proper name for this project. I contacted SourceForge and asked them the process to change the Project name as this is currently not automated, and if everything is fine you should get redirected already to the new domain from the old caduntu.org domain.

Something more:

Scott has been VERY helpfull setting up a PPA for this project so that the Ubuntu folk can easily install LibreCAD on there systems.

For Ubuntu 10.04 use:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:showard314/librecad
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install librecad

for Ubuntu 10.10 and Natty use:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:showard314/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install librecad

So, now I am going to setup my server to serve LibreCAD and make sure DNS records are changed!

  1. Great project, and great name, much better than CADuntu 🙂 I was kind of annoyed (last time I needed a cad program, which is not that often, but still) that qcad was depending on qt3 and getting difficult to install.

  2. Yes, thanks for improving Qcad,
    I have just installed it at ubuntu with command line and it worded right away.
    I used qcad before, but feld that it was not further developped
    and this name is really good.

      you we need a logo aswell. I have seen some logo’s passing my screen and one I like quite a bit but that looked also (according to some people) a bit to close to the Ubuntu logo. I would need to write down what is required, but I think it’s fairly simple to describe. I will try to do this today and post it here.

        I like the simplicity and the CAD type of font, however as suggested we should setup a contest, I will blog about that today what I think the logo should have and represent.
        Obviously the created of the logo will deserve a space on the splash screen and about box with a link to his/her website.

        • of course! and the logo i suggested can be a start for people want to create better logos (and justify why they think are better, of course) – i keep my suggestion for this contest, since i also enjoy the idea of the plotter-drawn text, the pale cyan which makes us remind the colour of the photosensible papers used on ultra-violet copies from early-mid of 20th century, and the ‘blue of the sky’ (even pale) for a sense of freedom – so, all people want to do better logos, be welcome to the contest! 🙂

  9. What happened to the download for linux? I had it loaded, but reformatted my drive and lost it. Now when i look for it, i only find the win and osx files.

    Unless i’m looking in the wrong area, i am a linux noob. I’ve tried following the instructions you provided but it’s not found.

      we never had a download for Linux, but there is a PPA available for Ubuntu.
      if you are using Ubuntu then this should work:

      For Ubuntu 10.04 use:
      sudo add-apt-repository ppa:showard314/librecad
      sudo apt-get update
      sudo apt-get install librecad

      for Ubuntu 10.10 and Natty use:
      sudo add-apt-repository ppa:showard314/ppa
      sudo apt-get update
      sudo apt-get install librecad

        I’ve tried that and this is what i keep getting:

        Reading package lists… Done
        Building dependency tree
        Reading state information… Done
        E: Unable to locate package librecad

        I’m not sure what i’m doing wrong.

        • Thanks for helping test libreCAD and trying out a linux distro!

          I’ll try to help you:

          1) What Linux distribution are you using? The PPAs listed only work for Ubuntu. If you have something other than Ubuntu, you need to follow RVT’s great compilation instructions and download the source code (there is a blog post about it here: http://www.librecad.org/2010/10/debian-64-bit-and-ubuntu-compile-how-to/). The blog post says 64-bit, but it should work on any architecture

          2) If you are using Ubuntu, what version are you using? The PPAs listed only work for versions 10.04 and newer. If you are using 9.10 or earlier, you have to download and compile the source code.

          I appears that you are either using Ubuntu version 9.10 or earlier, not using Ubuntu, or you followed the instructions for the wrong version.

          For Ubuntu 10.04 enter the following into the command line (one command at a time):
          sudo add-apt-repository ppa:showard314/librecad
          sudo apt-get update
          sudo apt-get install librecad

          for Ubuntu 10.10 and Natty use:
          sudo add-apt-repository ppa:showard314/ppa
          sudo apt-get update
          sudo apt-get install librecad

          • Hi scott, thanks for replying.

            First off, i’m using ubuntu 10.10. I’m not sure what the problem was, perhaps i used the instructions for the wrong version of ubuntu the first time i added the ppa. In any event, i went into software sources, deleted the originals, then re-added them and it worked!

            The strange part is that i did this a few times before, and was still getting the error not found message.

    I’m using LibreCAD on Ubuntu 10.10 and it works just fine.

    Were I can post a bug report ? So just in case, if I right click on a dxf file and open it, the drawing is messy, and if I open LibreCAD before and file-open this same file it shows OK. Any directions?

      bug reports can be made here.
      If it’s possible, add a screenshot and the dxf file in question for me to take a look into.

      I am a bit surprised about what you are seeing, I have never seen anything like that happening. I don’t use Ubuntu in daily life tough…

    Estaria interesante que se sacaran un manual.Podria dar un par de sugerencias
    1 SERIA TENER UN ESPACIO PAPEL
    2 LO SIGUIENTE ES TENER LA POSIBILIDAD DE GUARDAR EL ARCHIVO PARA SWEET HOME 3D

    I was looking for an alternative to the confortable Qcad! Unfortunately Qcad is no more developed, so there are no chances to get the autosave function developed anytime in the future, furthermore it was always crashing in ubuntu lucid, terrible…!.

    Will LibreCAD be further developed? will anybody think about the autosave function?

      the current trunk version of LibreCAD has a autosave function implemented. It has only been tested by me so far. But didn’t had any complains yet from all trunk users.

      LibreCAD is in beta phase and the help system is worked on (50% done).
      To know what LibreCAD is, it’s a 2D CAD system, open source.
